SPRING CANDIDATES

INCREASED' ACTIVITY j SCHOOLING OF JUMPERS TOOLEY STREET WORKS WELL A feature of the training at Ellerslie , yesterday was the increased activity of ' prominent candidates for early spring events. The Xo. 3 grass track was used 3 for galloping, but the going was soft 3 and fast times were out of the question. 3 On the grass, Hinehou (Hearn) , strode over three furlongs in -13s. She is } an unraced two-year-old filly by Vaals ; from Morehu, and only recently lias 3 been taken up by J. Stonning. Wai- \ tarma (Gilchrist) showed improvement 5 by recording 40s. Valspear (Coon) was finishing strongly at the conclusion' of r half a mile in 51s, the first furlong ■> taking 13 2-ss. The disappointing Spear Dance gelding has been kept going > through the winter, and looks in very i solid condition. Mclva nui (Coon) covered six fur--3 longs in' 1.22 4.-5, the last three in 1 hurdling, hit out attractively, and looked as if ho could have done better. Bonnybolle (Markwick) and British 1 Talent (Cameron) were on terms at the j end of three in 40 4-ss. Both did their work well, without being ridden out. . and are speedy novices. Tutor (Wiggins) went pleasingly over five furlongs in 1.8 1-5, finishing 2 strongly the last half-mile in 545. F Tutor is booked to leave for Riccarton l on Monday to compete at the Grand - National Meeting. Bide-a-Wee's Early Speed Biddy Girl (McGrath) was easing up i at the end of three furlongs in 43 4-ss. . In recording 39 4-ss, Bide-a-AVee 1 (Brand) shaped promisingly, considering it was his first sprint for some 1 time. A rising three-year-old by Vaals 3 from Marion Acre, Bide-a-Wee did little 3 racing during the season, and is now 2 bearing a more solid appearance. i Water Fox (Wiggins) and High Quality (Green) cantered round to the ■ top of the straight and then sprinted 1 the last two furlongs under a good hold. ' The rising three-year-old Water Fox, by Foxbridge from Rippling Waters, impressed by his bold action. , The stable companions Lutanist 5 (Rae), Pern (Walkdr) and Silver Stick 1 (Dornan), were not doing their best to 3 run three furlongs in 39 4-os. It was i their first fast work since the autumn i and they shaped pleasingly. r There was little between Tooley j Street (Kearns) ar.d Miss Appellant (Bernie) at the end of half a mile in t 545, the first furlong taking 14 2-ss. " Tooley Street carried a good weight and was travelling well at the finish. Whenua Makes Good Impression 3 Sebrof (Parsons) and Imperator (Cameron) came home the last three p furl<3ngs of an easy round in 42 1-os. Sebrof continues to make excellent pro- ' gress. Odtaa (Cameron) and Loyal Grant (Gemmell) were under restraint ■ while running half a mile in 57 2-os. '■ Whenua (Wiggins) conceded Agog (Bruce) several lengths' start from the half-mile, but at the finish there was little between them in 555. Whenua's time was considerably better, and he created a very favourable impression 1 for one of limited experience. Tutor (Ritchie) cleared two hurdles in good style. Agog (Williams) and Ringshot (Ritchie) were associated over the same hurdles. Agog outjumped his companion, to give impressive display. ' Gay Cavalier (Williams) jumped four of the steeplechase fences on the flat faultlessly. The country-trained gelding looks as if he has done a solid preparation, in view of the Pakuranga Hunt meeting. NEW PLYMOUTH TRACK MAJORITY BEATS AUSSIE RA • ■ f. ' ' ' [by TELEGRAPH —-OWN" correspondent] NEW PLYMOUTH. Thursday . The course proper, with the flags out about 30 feet, was available for galloping to-day.,• • •, • i Gold Card speeded up the last two. furlongs of a round io record 275. He has .the makings of 8. good three-year-old. ' " /. ' * • "Majority beat Aussie Ra over six furlongs in 1.21 2-5. " Ned Cuttle covered a mile at threequarter puce. Civic Reception completed a round by running the last two furlongs in 27 l-os. Booklaw had a working gallop over a mile. This pair schooled well over the steeplechase fences yesterday and will race at the point'-to-point meeting at Waitara on Saturday. - . H. Dulieu, with Kaiwaka. Liberals Mint and Glenvane, and J. P. Johnson, with Aussie Ra, leave for Marton tomorrow. , TURF JOTTINGS TRACK AND STABLE GOSSIP A very good impression was created by the Colossus two-year-old Colossal Chief when he ran second at Dannevirke and it should not be long beiore F McHugh leads him in a winner. He is trained at Marton. The Nigger Minstrel-Charlady gelding Royal Minstrel has been very disappointing in his recent starts, but probably the greasy going has prevented him from showing his best form. No fault can he found with Royal MinstrePs condition and he is sound again The stablemates Homily and hntail, who ran first and second, respectively, in the Connolly Handicap, have come in from a month's spoil find both appear to be in excellent order. Homily raced consistently during the year and, although it is unusual for Mr. M. Currie to race mares, she is to have another season on the turf. A good cup race nifty not be beyond this dfiiignter of Posterity. Araboa, whose first attempt _at hurdling at Trentham attracted notice, broke his journey south at Christchurch, where ho and his stable-mate, Strip", will remain for the Grand National moetiitg. Strip did not race at the Wellington meeting, but he is credited with having worked particularly well since the Dunedin winter races and there is a likelihood of his being taken to Australia later on. ( The Fordoll trainer, 0. Marks, is very hopeful that Smoke Screen will come into his own this spring. He will be a five-vear-old in the coming ses- | sion and that should he his best year, j Already Smoke Screen, as the first ( New Zeal antler to break 1.36. has ; proved himself a great horse up to a i mile. but. minor accidents have restricted his racing. However, he has j come up particularly well from his holi- i day, and it is probable ho will race at ] Wanganui in September. <
