AUCKLAND CLUBS
• average investments COMPARISON OF POOLS dominion and province HIGH HATING OF ELLERSLIE Figures- of totalisator investments made in tho Auckland Province this -- season show a healthy state of affairs for the 15 clubs grouped in that racing district. Stakes wero well maintained and in most instances there were some increases in prize-mone.v, although the stakes generally showed little variation compared with those of the previous season. In the past .12 months there have been two changes of importance in the absorption of the Taumarunui dates by the Ohinemu/i Jockey Club and in the permanent transfer of the Taknpuna Jockey Club's four days to Ellerslio. Therefore, the falling-ofT in tho average investments at meetings under the aegis of tho Auckland and Ohinemuri clubs is more apparent than real. Estimated New Zealand Average .If one may assume on tho estimated aggregate for tho season an average pool at galloping meetings of £3134. the average for the clubs of tho Auckland district of £43-13 makes a very favourable showing. The Auckland Racing Club shows the highest mean pool in tho country of £71363, that for the previous season being £7900, when the Takapuna average was £5021. The next highest average in the district was that of the Te Aroha club, which showed £'GSSB compared with £5858 for tho 1937-38 season. The Waikato club also has shown an improved figure of £5684 from £5418. The Franklin body is able to show a flattering patronage with an average investment a, race of £5530, a large increase on the £4525 which it was able .to boast last year. This club has a bright future^ The sum of £4709 represents the turnover of the Waipa Racing Club, which • is again using its Te Awamutu course, the decrease beirig £ll3. Hunts Have Good Meetings Avondale, favoured with fine weather, ghowed a good advance from £3854 to £4261, and the Bay of Plentv from £3066 to £3948.. Four days of racing at Paeroa this season gave, the Ohinemuri club an . average of £3839, in contrast with £4291, for two days in 1938. A similar result is shown bv the Matamata club, which averaged £3526. as opposed to £4099. ;; . ' The Rotorua body had an excellent year, averaging £3293 'a race in comparison with £2709 at its next preceding , gathering. The figures for Thames were respectively £2928 and £2426—an encouraging return. Whangarei also made a forward step from £1707 to £1863. All the three hunt clubs appear to he happily situated in the matter of public support of its steeplechase meetings. The Paknranga Hunt showed a standard pool of £4470, against £4333; the Waikato Hunt Club, £'4529, against £4063; and the Rotorua and Bay of Plenty Hunt Club, £2346, a large distinction from £lßls. tmStCHURCH HORSES ,JAN RIDI). Pandine jumped three - brush fences in a dashing manner. Gas Mask outjumped Bit 0' Blue at each of four hurdles and The Sandwichinan: went over six Hurdles, narrowly missing a fall at the fourth, but recovering cleverly. Jan Ridd was among those galloped. This was his /first serious work since . coming to the South Island and he shaped very encouragingly in beating Dranoel over six furlongs. / ;-Royal Chief and Moorsotis are going on the right way in their preparation fqrSfSydney racing and tliey: worked attractively over five furlongs, keeping together throughout. < 'Trench Fight, whose track ability ' has always been outstanding, was responsible for the best half-mile, coverings .that distance along the back stretch in 50s. He was the first horse to gallop, the track'cutting up later and; the timeS being slower. iCofctingham was allotted a working gallop, over a mile and a-half, rnain--3 taining dn even pace. Much interest will be in his race over country at' Washdyke '6n Saturday and no doubt, .if .he shapes satisfactorily, ho will be kept to steeplechasing at the coming Riccarton meetings. On tho other; „ hand, he ' appears to be well placed in the Grand National Hurdles With 9.15, especially as he won tho event two years' ago with 9.1. Dictate lias been in. steady work for weeks and he should be in good order for Grand National Week.
