Among tho Marton candidates to grn'o a good account of themselves was Quadroon. Other good gallops were those of Catalogue and Raeburn, Power Chief and Manawatu, Hunting Lore and Yed Prior. Over three furlongs, Onahau (E. Stewart) recorded 40 3-ss. La Coquette (S. Anderson), with a companion, took 40 2-ss. Girl Pat (H. Stewart) and Parian (S. Waddell), both lightweights, recorded 40s. Peach King went nicely to record similar time. He is very well at present, but a five-furlong race may be a little short for him. Fauvette (W. J. Broughton) and Guiding Light (G. Tattersall) completed half a mile together in 50s. Five-furlong Trials Evening Glow (Anderson) was allowed to strido along easily to cover five furlongs in 1.17. The same, horseman brought home Sporting Gift without pressure in 1.13 1-5. Colibri (13roughtou) was just ahead of Inchkeith (K. Tempcrton) in 1.12, the last three furlongs taking 445. Inchkeitli, stated Mr. H. E. Edmunds, was an acceptor for the Spring-grove . Handicap and not the Closeburn Handicap, at the Rangitikei Hunt meeting. In ail attractive effort over five furlongs, Amyas , Leigh (Broughton) headed Laughing Chief (Ireland) in 1.11 2-5. The former is to have his first race at Marton on Saturday. Golden Pidge (McGregor) and Pit Mark (Jenkins) were not -ridden out to register 1.12. Quadroon (Tattersall) was two lengths ahead of Moradabad (M. Bowden) and going strongly at the end of five furlongs run in 1.10 2-5, the last three in 42 4-ss, Seyfried Leads Way Home Hunting Lore (P. Jarvis) and Yed Prior (Tattersall) finished well together over seven furlongs in 1.41, the last five taking 1.13. Seyfried (D. McGregor), Old Surrey (Ireland) and Cuisinier (W. Jenkins) finished in that order at close intervals after six furlongs run in 1.24. It was a fine effort, with the last five taking them 1.10. Catalogue (Broughton) and Raeburn (Ireland) galloped six furlongs, the first in 15s. 1 Tie gradually increased the pace, to complete three in 42 2-ss. Over the last 50 yards both made an oxtra effort and they finished on terms in 1.24 2-5, tho last five having taken 1.9 2-5. Power Chief (Broughton) and Manawatu (J. GALLOPS AT HAWERA WINSOME LTJ'S PROGRESS AMOROSO BEATS VIRACIOUS SOUND EFFORTS BY SILK SOX [lir TELEGRAPH OWN CORRESPONDENT] \ HAWERA, Thursday For the final gallops of horses engaged at Marton on Saturday, the extreme outside of the course proper, where the going was heavy, was available at Hawera to-day. Apioroso (Poi) turned tho tables on Viracious (Toki), at the close of five furlongs in 1.11. Both horses are in good shape. Yiracious will probably contest the Closeburn Handicap, in which event he will be ridden by W. Jenkins. Apparently he has thrown off the effects of his cold. Winsome Lu (Riley) conceded Race Away (Graham) three lengths' start, from the five-furlong post, but they wore on terms over the final stages, to record 1.9 3-5. Winsome Lu has been responsible for rapid improvement and she may run prominently in: the Riddiford Handicap, in spite of tho fact that she has not sported silk for several months. Race Away was under a hold throughout, but he will probably be in need of a rs.ee. Gitana .Lass (Chaplin) sprinted half a mile along the back in 5Gs. No fault can be found with her condition. Disturbed and Silk. Sox set out from the mile and a-quarter post at a working gallop and increasing the pace approaching the back straight, tho pair recorded 1.11 2-5 for the last five furlongs. Both infused dash into their task. Barry Bov (Cole), by Hunting Song —Lady Whirlwind, and Red Myosotis (Holland), hit out attractively in a two-furlong sprint in 2(5' 2-ss. Barry Boy revelled in the conditions and his companion also shaped pleasingly. For ft similar trial, Val Pere (Riley) registered 26 4-os. He has made progress since joining L. E. George s stable. , ■ , . . Belle Cane (Sexton), Mahaina (I'risk) and the Vaals—Airway hlly completed two rounds by sprinting up the straight on both occasions. Ihey are not being hurried.
