TRAVEL CLUB

WEEKLY MORNING TEA ADDRESS ON ENGLAND MANY GUESTS PRESENT The reasons why he loved England were outlined by Mr. D. A. Neal, an Englishman, who has lived in New Zealand for some years, to members of the Auckland Travel Club at the weekly morning tea in the Milno and Choyce Reception Hall yesterday. The chairwoman was Mrs, Spencer Mason, and the hostesses were Mrs. H. T. Merritt and Mrs. G. E. Anderson.

[ Mr. Neal said the charm of an Eng- | lish spring, the song of the nightingale, | the quiet friendliness of the inns, the appeal of villages and cathedrals, the pageantry of London, and, lastly, the common, homely sounds of English life, were all things which endoared England • to one, and were things which could not bo reduced to commercial terms. "The making of England," he continued, "has not been violent, ' but gentle, and its development along comparatively quiet lines, without violent revolutions, has produced a fine typo of man and made England a country worth fighting for." Floral shoulder sprays were presented to Mrs. C. F. Wiseman, who contributed two songs, and to Mrs. W". S. Clark, who was the accompanist. A. special welcome was accorded to Mrs. Neil Walker, of Sydney, who, during her residence in Auckland, was a member of the ladies' committee,. and to Miss C. L. Owen, of London, who was in charge of the Belgian Red Cross work during the war.

Other overseas and out-of-town guests present were: —Mrs. Ralph Congreve (Southern India), Miss F. S. Tuff (London), Miss P. Thompson (Capetown, South Africa), Mrs. Kilworth (Sydney), Mrs. T. E. Lowa (Wellington), Mrs. M. McCready (Taneatua), Miss Dorothy Steele (Whangarei).
