MOUNT EDEN FIRES
DAMAGE TO HOUSE OCCUPANTS ABSENT* AT TIME Two fires occurred in the Mount Eden district yesterday within*only a few chains of each other. The first took place shortly before 10 o'clock in the morning in a house at 21 Edenvale Road, occupied by Mr. and Mrs H. E. Low.
When an engine from the Mount Eden Fire Station and another from the Central station arrived on the scene they had to drive very slowly up the street so densely was it filled with smoke. However, it was only a few minutes before the firemen had the flames under control.
The fire severely damaged the livinsz toom, the kitchenette and a passageway. The wall of a house next door was badly scorched. Neither Mr nor Mrs. Low was at home at the time Iwo caged budgerigars are believed to have been lost in the fire. One was a prized talking specimen. The second outbreak, which took place at 3.50 p.m., caused severe damjF ,Wf h :}\ ouse 10 Sunnyside Road, Mount Eden, belonging to Mr T. H. Milner. Machines from the Mount Eden and Central stations again attended the call, the fire beinoput out with two first-aid extin" guishers.
