ACCIDENT ON WARSHIP

SHIPWRIGHT'S LEG BROKEN STRUCK BY ANCHOR CHAIN A compound fracture of the left leg was suffered by William Watt Ritchie, aged 25, a shipwright on H.M.S. Leander, when the command was given to weigh anchor in the Hauraki Gulf yesterday morning at about 10 o'clock. It is understood he was struck by the anchor chain. The cruiser was due to return to port yesterday afternoon, and immediately made for the Dovonport Naval Base. The injured man, who had been treated by the surgeon commander of the Leander. was taken to the admiralty steps at Queen's Wharf by launch and was conveyed to the Auckland Hospital by a St. John ambulance.
