STAMP 250 YEARS OLD

PHILATELISTS EXCITED DOCKWRA PENNY ISSUE [from a special correspondent] LOXDOX. Oct. is Philatelists were excited this week at the news that a rare English stamp dated 1682 had just been found. It is the only known copy outside the British Museum of a William Dockwra penny stamp, and it is said to be worth £IOO. " The discovery," says Mr. Robson Lowe, philatelist, a member of whose staff found it, "is a very fine example of the London pennv post stamp. It was used on a letter dated June 27, 1682, and addressed to a house in 'Old Jury,' " The London penny post was established by William Dockwra, in 1680. A few months after the date on the letter successful action was taken against Dockwra for infringement of the postal monopoly.
