FIFTY YEARS AGO
BRITAIN AND COLONIES A speech by Sir Julius Vogel.in London 50 years ago. in which he discussed the relationship between Britain and the colonies, attracted considerable interest both in London and in Australia and New Zealand. The following is an extract from the New Zealand Herald of October 29, 1888: — "With reference to the Chinese que* tion, Sir Julius Vogel said that the colonies should not needlessly embark* 58 the home authorities but deal with the matter in a straightforward manner and let the Colonial Office look after its own interests. The question was one tor the colonies to settle, and if they di not look after their own interests, tMj could not expect England to do so.^ "Referring to the Australian Defence Bill, Sir Julius considered i was not objectionable when looked "P° n in the light of a business transactionwhereby the colonies were able toi g* warships cheaply, but it would be • dangerous movement for the colonies/ assume the appearance of contributing to maintain the Imperial Navy.
