- REMARKABLE GROWTH area and population [rBOM OUR OWN correspondent] SYDNEY, Oct. 18 Launceston, in Northern Tasmania, will celebrate the 50th anniversary of Its attaining the rank of a city this month, for on October 16, 1888, an !Act of Parliament vras passed conferring on Launceston the rhnk of city. since Colonel Paterson arrived at Port Dalrymple from Sydney and sailed up the Tamar to establish* a settlement at the junction of the North and South Esk Rivers, 84 years passed before the settlement reached proportions which merited its right to be termed a city. In 1888 Launceston covered an area of 3340 acres, and possessed 125 streets of a total length of 45 miles; it contained 3500 buildings with a population of about 17,000 inhabitants. . The city was assessed at £120,539 and municipal revenue was £20,000. Now the population is well over 27.000 and th*» area 3!)00 lacres, th«» assessment value is £470,139, and the income £277,908.
