CRUELTY TO ANIMALS
Sir, —On a recent visit to several districts in the North Auckland Province my companion and I were horrified to see the miserable condition of many of the cattle. The great majority appeared to be half-starved and were pitiably emaciated, while to come across well-nourished animals was the exception. We were informed in one place that the reason for this is that many of the farms are over-stocked and that few trouble to make hay. We consider. and many will no doubt agree, that those who keep animals in a state of semi-starvation are guilty of cruelty. Apart from the condition of these poor dumb beasts which so distressed us, aud to which we wish to call attention, this is surely a very short-sighted policy for farmers to pursue. F.F.
