WAIKATO STOCK

BRISK MARKETS FEED STILL PLENTIFUL ABSENCE OF FROSTS Feed is still plentiful in the Waikato, only one frost of any consequence having been recorded so far this season. As a result of these conditions practically all branches of the stock market remain brisk, especially the store cattle and dairy sections. Wherever good quality station-bred cattle are offered, recent advanced rates are well maintained. At the Morrinsville sale, which appears to be the established distributing centre for store stock in the Waikato, a large yarding of store sheep ■ and station-bred cattle was offered on Friday last. A keen inquiry existed for i all male cattle and prices realised , were fully up to expectations. ' Although the female cattle did not j elicit the same spirited competition, j practically a total clearance was effected. The entry of wethers at the j same centre came forward in good order. The forward-condition sheep of the line attracted most attention and sold up to. 26s 3d, while the balanco realised 24s 9d. The, quality of the ewes offered was not attractive and although buyers were plentiful, bidding was dull and prices realised were rather disappointing. There is 110 doubt that if good clean lines of ewes could be obtained for Waikato markets, very satisfactory prices would be obtained. Interest in dairy cattle continues unabated and highly satisfactory values both in the yards and the paddock continue to be realised. Quite a number of clearing sales have already been held and exceptionally good averages have been obtained for high-producing herds. , Conditions in the various sections : are as follows: — BEEP Beef is coming forward in good numbers and prices generally are firm. At the central yards on Tuesday cow beef was yarded in larger numbers than for some weeks past. Good quality ox and cows maintained recent rates, but secondary and plain was inclined to case. One extra heavy prime pen of heifers realised £l2, which is the highest price recorded for female cattle at this centre for some time. Extra choice ox was quoted at 30s to 30s per 1001b; prime ox, 32s to 355; plain and unfinished, 25s to 295; choice young cows and heifers, 32s to 355; prime cows, 26s to 31 r; second quality cows, 18s to 24 s. MUTTON Supplies of mutton at the outside markets are still limited, but at the Frankton auction on Tuesday the offering was one of the largest se«n for some time. Best wethers made 33s to 345; medium-weight wethers, 31s to 32s 9d; light and unfinished, 27s (Jd to 30s; prime maiden ewes, 25s to 26s 9d; heavy fat ewes, 22s to 23s 9d; well-finished lighter ewes. 18s to 21s; unfinished, 14s to 17s.
