NEW SOUND EQUIPMENT

THE MIRROPHONIC SYSTEM The first picture to be screened in Auckland with tho recently-perfected Mirrophonic sound equipment, "100 Men and a Girl," the New Universal production with the popular girl soprano Deanna Durbin in the principal role, is to commence a season at the State Theatre to-morrow. Adolph Menjou has the main supporting part in the picture, and accompanying Miss Durbin in a number of her songs is heard the Philadelphia Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Leopold Stokowski. Tho new sound system, lately installed in the State Theatre, is the result of several years' of research work carried out by tho Bell Telephonic Laboratories, tho firm that originally introduced the transmission of sound from the screen. All the most modern methods of sound transmission are embodied in the invention, including a now type of di-phonic _ loud-speakers. One of these speakers is used to express the more delicate sounds and the second all noises above the frequency of 300 cycles, an innovation that allows of greater efficiency. A further improvement lies in the even distribution of the sound throughout tho theatre. This is made possible in tho di-phonic loud-speakers by means of multicellular horns.
