The visitors had declared at 320 for one wicket in reply to Hampshire's first innings total of 157, but heavy rain fell during the luncheon adjournment and prevented further play. When stumps were drawn on Thursday the Australians had 204 on the board for the loss of oris wicket, the not out men being Fingleton (81) and Bradman (71). There was great applause when Btadman hooked Baring to the boundary to win the race for the iirst thousand runs in May, previous to which he had pulled that bowler for three glorious fours and glanced him for a three in the same over. The partnership added 242 runs in 205 minutes. Bradman hit 22 boundaries, while Fingleton scored 15 fours in his 290 minutes at the wicket.
