MCE FOR 1000 RUNS TWO ENGLISH RIVALS W. EDRICH REQUIRES 17 MORE LONDON, May 27 Tlio captain of tlic Australian cricket team, D. G. Bradiuan, in compiling 145 not out against Hampshire at Southampton to-day, reached an aggregate of 1021 Tuns for the tour. He thus won the race for the first batsman to make 1000 runs.by,the end of May, and in all cricket history he is the only player twice to accomplish the feat. Bradman also scored his thousand earlier in tho season than any other player. W. J. Edrich, Middlesex, and W. R. Hammond, Gloucester, require 17 and 98 runs respectively to touch the 1000 mark, and the former will have his chance against the Australians in the next match of their tour. Hammond, who made 1028 runs between May 7 and May 28, 1927, will play against Warwickshire at Bristol to-morrow, and therefore has a chance of squaring accounts with Bradman. The latter, both in 1930 and 1938, had one innings on April 30, while Hammond's first game this season was against Hampshire on May 4.

Bradman has scored two . double centuries and three centuries in the seven innings he has had since the start of the Australians' tour.
