GROUND SUBSIDES
LARGE HOLE IN STREET OLD THAMES MINE WORKINGS [by telegraph—owx correspondent] THAMES, Thursday A hole about 12ft. in diameter aDd about Bft. deep appeared during the week in a section in Bella Street, which was at one time used as a playing area by the Central School. There hare been two previous subsidences in this area in the history of Thames.
Between 50 and 60 years ago the Bright Smile engine house and poppet head disappeared out of sight one night, and about ten years later a large hole close to the first one appeared. These were filled in by mullock from the mining tips. The new hole shows a large amount of mullock around its edges, and it is probable that the subsidence was caused by the falling in of old workings. The ground underneath was well worked out in the early days in prospectiug for gold.
