STEEL SUPPLIES ARRIVE
SUSPENDED WORKS RESUMED POSITION IN HAWKE'S BAY [by telegbaph—own cobbespoxdent] HASTINGS. Thursday After a series of delays, extending in some cases into several xnonths, a number of construction works in the Hawke's Bay district has been resumed with the belated fulfilment of orders for steel. The inability of manufacturers' agents to furnish supplies according to schedule had resulted in the suspension or delay of a number of important undertakings. One of the major works to which the shortage of steel meant a delay was the erection of the new Government buildings at Napier. Several overhead railway bridges on level crossings in Hawke's Bay also suffered from this cause. Three months were lost in respect of an overhead bridge near Waipukurau, but the arrival of steel has now permitted this structure to bo completed. In the Woodville district work on three overhead bridges on a two-mile deviation has been retarded by as much as six months, having been suspended when the bridges were bordering on completion. Although a contract for the erection of an overhead railway bridge at Whakatu has been let by the Public Works Department, the lack of Bteel has delayed the work.
