STATE FLATS
POINT CHEVALIER PROVISION FOR PENSIONERS BEGINNING ANNOUNCED A block of four flats for pensioners is to be built immediately at the Tramway Extension Estate, Point Chevalier, states the Standard, official organ of the New Zealand Labour movement, and will be available to tenants at a rental commensurate with their means. These will be the first of a series of similar blocks to be built by the Government Housing Construction Department in all the main centres. The block at Point Chevalier will be situated about 200 yds from the tramline. Each flat is of the bed-sit-ting room-kitchenette type, and the building will be of the one-floor variety. According to the ground plan each one will have a living room measuring 12ft. by, 13ft., with an alcove, sft. by 9ft., off it for a bed, an entrance lobby, a small kitchen, Bft. by 6ft. 6in., fully equipped for two persons to have their meals there, and a bathroom. A fuel cupboard, linen press and wardrobe, three powtr plugs and internal radio and earth plugs will be standard fitments. The specifications show that each flat will have a fireplace, and two will have sitting-out verandahs. All will have hot-water systems and either gas or electric ranges. A community laundry will serve the block. "All interior fittings will be of the same standard set by the State houses at Orakei and elsewhere. When the Prime Minister, Mr. Savage, was in Auckland during the Christmas vacation he said the accommodation at Point Chevalier would be such as to supply the needs of a type of tenant of moderate means, for whom little had been done in. the past.
