TRENTHAM WORK

FAST TIMES RECORDED GOOD MILE BY CERNE ABBAS SMALL BOY ALSO IMPRESSES [uv TICLKO lt.U'lt —OWN CO 111 t KSI ■ONI)K NT ] WELLINGTON, Tuesday October has been n dry, cold month, with the result that the Trentham tracks arc very fast and linn for this time of the year. Moreover, recent hard frosts have checked the growth of the grass. The tracks could do with some rain before the meeting. It was chilly early this morning but there was little wind. Several visitors were on the scene. The outside of the course proper was the most popular training ground, but the plough was also freely used. The two-year-olds used the course proper from the half-mile start. Cerne Abbas went pleasingly in a milo gallop with Boomerang in 1.40}, the last half in 50}s. Cerne Abbas was going the better at the finish. Both carried light-weights and it was the best gallop of the morning over the distance. Cuddle and Small Boy ran a mile in 1.411. They went fast early, the first half being run in under 50s. They were doing it nicely at the finish, but Small Boy was holding the upper hand. Handicap Horses Gallop Shy made tho pace early from Arctic King, Might and Hunting Cat, with Southern Blood going as far as the straight. Shy was eased in the last furlong, Arctic King and Might drawing out to finish a couple of lengths ahead of him, with a gap to Southern Blood and Hunting Cat. Arctic King came home very solidly, tho time being 1.41 J. Ho had his full Wellington Handicap weight, while the others carried light boys. The first half was run in 49}s. Arctic King went as well as any other handicap horse during tho morning. Shy also went well. Fairy Dale finished in front of Rockingham at the end of five furlongs, running the last half milo in 50}s. Rockingham blew very hard on pulling up. Myriam did a comfortable seven furlongs and appears to have freshened up nicely since racing at Otaki. Parry was going better than Hamarin at tho end of four furlongs in 52} s. Siegmund worked very well with Mother-in-law, running six furlongs in 1.21. He could have left his companion many lengths at the finish. Siegmund should win again soon. Trials on the Plough On the plough, Sunee and Good Sun, tho first horses to work, sprinted half a mile in 495, the former being in front. Tho plough is as fast as the grass tracks. Sunee showed that he was not harmed by his hard race at Masterton. Debhani appeared to be going equally j as well as Royal Chief at the end of j six in 1.16}, the last half-mile occupy- j ing 51s. Debham did badly on tho Auckland trip, but has freshened up again. Stargono was going a littlo better than Tidewaitcr at the end of five furlongs, running tho last half-mile in 49}s. Sigurd went seven furlongs; Matoru and Lustral a mile. Cricket j worked well with Accomplice. Royal ; Minstrel registered 492s for half a j mile, but Clcssamor was not timed. In a run down the straight from the half-mile start, Twenty Grand, Diareus and Boauly finished ahead of War Cloud. Protector and Peerless kept to* get her and went well Protector is fit with his racing, and Peerless has improved with her gallop at Masterton. Rakahanga cantered down with Black Thread. Good Son Moves Freely After breakfast, when tho weather was sunny, Surmount finished ahead of Rarotonga. Ho looks fit and should go well in the Wellesley Stakes. Good Son was clear of Night Attack in a short sprint. Good Son hit out very freely. A fine exhibition of schooling over four hurdles was given by Red Sun, who afterward worked on the plough. He is in good order. Bluo Tiger jumped two hurdles twice and Polabian was Bcho'olcd over four.
