TAKANINI HORSES
ROMAN I FOR SYDNEY HIGH QUALITY RECOVERING GOOD PROGRESS OF GRATEFUL I After showers overnight, the middle gras,s, with the poles out 51t., at Takanini was in perfect order yesterday. The plough was also in good order and used extensively for pace work. On the grass Lap Up (Bartle) was going bettor than Miss Lovelock (G. Smith) al? the end of an easy halfmile. .Miss Lovelock is now taking more interest in her work, bub will not race until next spring. Parquet, now a. very solid mare, was worked twice round, finishing solidly up the straight. The two colts in F. Smith's charge were given ligbt exorcise. The Beau Pere colt is thickening out well and will make a big horse. Silver Glow and Highbrow are being kept going while the tracks are still in good order, and did useful work. - Among those to work 011 the plough were: Grateful, Round Up, Anion, Mia A era, inquisitor, Professional, High Quality and J J oval Passage, who completed a second round by running seven furlongs on the bit. Bon Star Under Cloud Romani trotted twice round. He leaves for Sydney on May 12 and will go into the stable of F. McGrath. Romani comes from the same family as the good stayers Master Delavel (Auckland Cup), Miss Delavel (A.R.C. Derby), Kilboy (A.J.C. Derby), Murray King (Sydney Cup), and being by Paladin, he may stay when matured. Gay Talk is being eased off before his shipment to India, via Singapore, on May 12.
Bon Star is still being persevered with, but it is doubtful if he will stand another preparation at present. His near knee is still giving a lot of trouble. High Quality is rapidly recovering from the injury to his stifle that he received in the* Brighton Hurdles, and is in regular work in preparation for coining events, which may include steeplechasing. Survoy as Jumper Another who will bo an acquisition to the ranks of jumpers will be Survoy. He will probably resume steeplechasing at Pukekohe. Grateful lias been doing some very useful pace work lately and is in excellent health to continue his preparation in a serious manner. Mainland and. Bound Up are both looking very healthy, while Anion is full of muscle. The condition of these horses does credit to their trainer, F. Smith, who lias lately experienced a well-deserved turn of success. A. Quinlivan is soon to receive a number of additions to his stable, including a colt by Laekham, a colt by Xightmareh, a colt by Beau Pere, a colt by The Ace, a filly bv Bronze Eagle—Grey Linnet, and a three-year-old colt by Hunting Song.
HxiWERA ACTIVITIES SPRINT BY GOLDEN ORCHID [by telegraph—OWN correspondent] HAVt'ERA, Tuesday Conditions were ideal for fjist work this morning, when some interesting trials were recorded by horses engaged at Woodville. The plough was in great order for galloping. Le Grand shaded Fafner at the end of three furlongs in 37 2-5.5. Both worked satisfactorily. Flying Chief and Red Manfred were to have sprinted half a mile, but the hitter's rider broke a leather and Flying Chief ran the distance alone in 535. Flying Chief is much im proved. Kia Ora sprinted three furlongs smartly in 36 l-ss. Master Limond and Corowa traversed six furlongs at threequarter pace. Both horses worked scratehily, and neither is very forward. Dancing Lady and Golden Orchid finished together at the close of half a mile in 50s. The latter is making steady progress, and is to race at the'local meeting next month. Autumn Leaf and Naughty Marietta were on terms at the end of five furlongs in 1.3 4-5.
On Monday morning Corowa was schooled over four hurdles, giving a fair display for a novice, although he jumped carefully. Cynical Kid was allotted two rounds of strong pace-work. Others to do useful tasks were One Whetu, Tout Le Monde Vadanoe, Trilitho, Notium, lndescretion and Pantoon. International has quite recovered from the injuries he received at Feilding at Easter and infused plenty of dash into a round of strong work. 0. Cox has recommissioned the Chief Ruler —Phrosa colt Ruling Star, who was turned out for four months.
