ELLERSLIE TRACK
GALLOP BY VALSPEAR SCHOOLING OF JUMPERS BLACK MARLIN AND LORD VAL The Xo. 3 grass was available for galloping at KUerslie yesterday, but very little fast work was attempted, most of the horses being restricted to steady pacing on the sand and the tan. The jumpers had the use of the hurdles in the middle. On the grass Valspcar (Craddock) began slowly over seven furlongs, running the last six in 1.17 3-5 and the final half-mile in 51 ]-ss. He lias not been extensively raced, but bis form this season has been disappointing. The two-year-olds Bright Idea, Clansman and Bronze Wings sprinted three furlongs in 41 2-ss. They have made good progress under J. Buchanan's guidance and are thriving on their work.
Locknit covered six furlongs in 1.22 2-5, the final half-mile taking 53 2-ss. Ho has gone on the right way in recent weeks. Kiltowyn, who is commencing to move along faster, ran three furlongs in 41 2-ss. Poi Dance (Fearn) ran five furlongs in 1.5 2-5. She moved with freedom and should be capable of a sound effort when next raced. Jolly Broney (Fearn) was too good for Billy Boy (Tremain) over half a mile in 53 l-ss. Leo Colossus (Dulieu) covered a round in 1.44 1-5. He appears all the better ior his recent course of schooling. All Irish (Watson) traversed a round in 1.43, the last six furlongs in 1.20 2-5 and the final half-mile in 54 2-ss. Erase (D. Craddock) and Jalldy Karo (X. Watson) set out to school over four hurdles, but after jumping the first two correctly Erase blundered at the third and lost his rider. Jalldy Karo completed his task safely and gave an improved display, Black Marlin (A. Moore) and Lord Val (l'\ E. Baker) were responsible for a good display over four hurdles, although they were hindered at the final obstacle by the riderless Erase, who had schooled ahead of them. Whakarcrehau (M. Coon) led Speedfast (L. Dulieu) over four hurdles. Whakarerehau, who is a half-brother to Glendowie, shaped well, but Specdfast will require more experience before he becomes proficient.
AWAPUNI TRACK NOTES / WORK ON COURSE PROPER GOOD GALLOPS RECORDED [by telegraph—ow.v correspondent] PALMERSTON NORTH, Tuesday Awapuni mentors had the privilege of galloping next to the rails 011 the course proper this morning. The going was good, although the surface was slippery after a frost. The first horse to essay fast work was Flammarion (N. Voitrc), who, in view of his unsoundness, was galloped on the plough, running half a mile in 525. The Arausio gelding has benefited by his recent racing. Aria (S. Anderson), a maiden from W. Pine's stable, had Cloudy Bay (G. Tattersall) as a partner over half a mile on the course proper. The former was.the, smarter to begin, and although Cloudy Bay joined issue at the top of the straight the daughter of Paonui was a neck in front at the post. Corroboree (R. Chisholm) left six furlongs behind in 1.17, after taking 40s for his first three furlongs. The Lord Quex gelding will have his next outing at Woodville. Chat (Tattersall) accomplished a similar task, but required a couple of ticks longer to fulfil her task. Tail Light (D. Mansfield) was clear of Shining Hour (S. Anderson) at the end of three furlongs run in 38}s. The latter is a sister to Karl. But little has been asked of her as yet.
Petrarch (A. H. Murray) showed the way to Gay Boy (C. Thomson) over a round, the last six furlongs taking 1.19J, but the latter was doing it very comfortably at the close. Blulfer (S. Anderson) slipped over half a mile in 51s, while later The Crooner, with the same horseman in the saddle, ran his last three furlongs of a half-mile task in 3?is. Catalogue (Chisholm) worked very smoothly, running fix furlongs in 1.17 He was anxious to go on with it. Taumu (P. Rae) and Lactose (Bates), two novice jumpers, sent over five ilights of hurdles. While both fenced somewhat carefully, the former in particular showed promise. Forest Glow (Parkes) and Esteem (W. J. McDowell) were sent over four flights with a fair amount of pace on. Although both jumped a little big, it was quite a satisfactory display. The latter, who has come back after a long spell, is looking in excellent order. True Shaft has returned to Awapuni after a period under F. Carmont's charge at Foxton. The former trial companion to Nightmarch during the latter's heyday will be given a further chance to make good as a hurdler. L. Knapp is holding a strong hand with Tudor, Forest Glow, Pango and Riotous, but ho has sent Miss Pango back to her owner to be qualified for future hunters' events. He has a full brother to Miss Pango in work and this gelding will race as Herangi.
TE AWAMUTU GALLOPS HALF-MILE BY CELTIC LAD [by telegraph—OWN correspondent] TE AWAMUTU, Tuesday The flags were out about 25 leet on the course proper this morning, when the going was excellent. Celtic Lad was first out and ran home from the half-mile in 51 3-ss. Quadroon recorded 52s over the same distance. He is in nice order and will in all probability race at Pukekohe. Hutana was not extended to run half-a-mile in 51 l-ss. Iliuminagh could have done better than 1.10 for five furlongs. Sweet Rose, with Besiege as a companion, was doing nicely at the end of six furlongs in 1.19 2-5. Arcadian was schooled over five fences, but did not impress. I ualieahe (Murtagh) was also schooled and gave a safe display. Useful work on the plough was performed by General Riske, Barricade, Tonnerre, Orate,' Ngakaru, Superior Guard, Gay Sister and Wild Nation.
