IMPORTING TRADESMEN
PROTEST BY UNION A protest against the importation of tradesmen from other countries on the. grounds that an acute unemployment problem still exists in New Zealand, is made by Mr. J. F. Hawken, president of the Auckland Bricklayers' Union. His attention had been drawn to an advertisement in an Australian newspaper stating that 12 bricklayers were required for the Now Zealand Government's housing scheme. "There is no shortage of bricklayers," said Mr. Hawken. "A number of our members are still unemployed or engaged on extremely casual work. The introduction of more tradesmen will not onlv accentuate our difficulty, but will inevitably lead to the disappointment of new arrivals, who will soon be reduced to sustenance instead of being engaged on work at their trade."
