BAY OF ISLANDS GROUNDS GOOD RESULTS OBTAINED i [by telegraph—OWN correspondent] RUSSELL, Thursday Good results are being obtained by a party of Taranaki visitors to the deepsea fishing grounds. Mr. G. R. McLean, of Hawera, caught a striped marlin, weighing 3061b., which fought for an hour and a quarter. Yesterday Mr. B. C. Gibson landed a striped marlin after a contest lasting an hour and a-half. The fish weighed 2551b. A third member of the party, Mr. E. L. Death, of Hawera, hooked a mako shark, which put up a great fight for an hour and a-half. On arrival at Russell it was found to weigh 2641b. Mr. Harold Slater, another member of the party, had a thrilling appear- i ance with a black marlin, which was finally landed. It weighed 3251b. Good weather has been experienced during March and with a month to go the fishing season this year will be a record one. TESTING WHANGAREI WATERS A STRIPED MARLIN LANDED [BY TELEGRAPH —OWN CORRESPONDENT] WHANGAREI, Friday At the request of the Whangarei Agricultural and Pastoral Society in its endeavour to establish that big game fishing can be obtained in Whangarei waters, Mr. S. Ellis, of Hamilton, went cruising down the coast yesterday in his launch, Reelemin. Mr. Ellis stopped just off Breain Head outside the Whangarei Heads and immediately hooked a striped marlin, which he landed after half-an-liour's fight, the fish weighing over 2001b. Another swordfish was seen.

Mr. Ellis brought his catch into Whangarei this morning when the society sent it to the Auckland Farmers' Freezing Company's works at Moercwa. It will be kept in cold storage until the society's winter exhibition, wher» it will be placed on display.

CATCHES AT MAYOR ISLAND

AUSTRIAN VISITORS' SUCCESS [by telegraph—own correspondent] TAURANGA. Friday After a stay of 37 clays at Mayor Island Mr. and Mrs. F. Krejcik, of Vienna, Austria, returned in the launch Tui this week. Their total catch comprised 30 big fish, 23 striped marlin, one black marlin, five mako sharks and one thresher shark. The swordfish ranged in weight up to 3621b. and the black marlin weighed 2531b. The thresher shark was 17ft. 4in. long, with a gifth of sft. 6in., and weighed 7041b. It took two and a-half hours to land. After the first hour the rod broke, and was then bound together with string. Mr. Krejcik plaved the fish for another hour and a-half and succeeded in landing it. Mr. and Mrs. Krejcik said that the holiday was the most delightful they had ever spent, and they are planning to return in 1939. Mr. R. Lowrv, of Taihape, and Mr. G. Burden, of '"Wakatipu. returned in the launch Naomi. Mr. Burden secured two striped marlin, of 2S6lb. and 2641b.. respectively, and Mr. Lowry landed a striped marlin of " Fishing from the launch Dauntless Air B. Fountain, of Lake Rotorua, secured swordfish of 2801b. and 2301b. and a black marlin of 3261b., and Mr. C. W. Vennell, of Cambridge, a swordfish of 3261b.
