CHAMPIONSHIP GAMES • THE OPENING RESULTS Seven championship games, four of which were completed before the call of time, wore played in the annual chess congress which opened in Auckland on Saturday. In the completed games, Scott defeated Rolling. Burrv defeated Hindin and Anderson defeated Hunter, while the game between Severne and Lynch ended in a draw. Details are as follows: — Severne v. Lynch (Four Knights.)— After an orthodox development exchanges in the middle game left an even pawn position, with one rook to each player. It was impossible to force the position and a draw was agreed upon at the :30th move. Newick v. Beyer (Irregular).—Tho game was adjourned at the Kith move, when Newick had two minor pieces and a pawn against a rook and four pawns. Jones v. McNab (Q.P. Orthodox). —The game was adjourned after -11 moves, when Jones had the attack with a slight, positional advantage. Abbott v. Erskine (Q.P. Grunfeld defence). —After a hard fight the game was adjourned at the 52nd move, Erskine being a pawn to the good. Helling v. Scott (Sicilian defence). —Scott developed more rapidly than bis opponent and won a pawn early. Kclling resigned at. the I Ith move. Burr.v v. Hindin (Sicilian defence). —Burry gave up a pawn in the early stages but developed an attack which forced Hindin's resignation at the 3(>th move. Hunter v. Anderson ißete's opening).— The game was even until the U)th move, when Hunter had to give up two pieces for a rook and pawn. Later Anderson made a fine combination with bishop, knight and rook, forcing Hunter's resignation at tho ■l3rd move. In the Premier Reserve Tourney, Mitchell beat Stephens and Langabeer beat R. Christensen. The remaining games wero adjourned.
