TRADE WITH AUSTRALIA
THE EMBARGO ON FRUIT COMMENT BY MR. NASH [by TELEGRAPH —SPECIAL REPORTER] WELLINGTON, Tuesday The cabled comment from Sydney that the Australian Minister of Defence, Sir Archdale Parkhill, had held discussions with members of the New Zealand Government during his visit last week regarding the embargo imposed by the Dominion against the Importation of Australian fruit, was the subject of comment by the Minister of Finance, the Hon. W. Nash, in an interview this evening. "The matter was certainly raised by Sir Archdale," Mr. Nash said, "but it could not be carried any great distance. As has been previously stated one of my first tasks after my return from my approaching visit to England will be to open official discussions with the Commonwealth Government regarding reciprocal trade. The question of fruit and potatoes will then be given due prominence."
LARGE ORANGE SHIPMENT ACUTE SHORTAGE RELIEVED The largest single shipment of South Australian oranges to be brought to Auckland arrived from Sydney by the Wangauella yesterday. The consignment comprised nearly 12,000 cases, of which 10,000 are for Auckland arid the remainder for the south. A permit was obtained from the Government to increase the number of cases by 4000 following the mishap to the Matua, which resulted in 10,000 cases of oranges being left at the Cook Islands. About half of the Wanganella shipment was stowed in the holds and the rest was stacked on deck. The oranges will bo on sale in the city today. The consignment will relieve the acute shortage of oranges that has existed for some time.
