RAILCAR COMPETITION

RESTRICTIONS SUGGESTED CONGESTION AT PALMERSTON [by telegraph—OWN correspondent] PALMERSTON NORTH, Tuesday Competition with municipal buses created by the uso of tho new rnilcar services for transporting passengers between the business area and Terrace End was the subject of a report by the traffic manager, Mr. H. J. Smith, to the Palrnerston North City Council last Jiight. The traffic manager stated that the railcar fare was 3d, compared with tho bus fare of 4d. He had mentioned tho matter to tho chairman of tho Transport Licensing Authority, who had said that ho would go into it. Mr. Smith suggested that a letter should be sent to the general manager of railways,. asking that no passengers should be picked up for journeys within the city area. This could bo stopped by fixing a minimum faro as far as Ashhurst. It was also pointed out by Mr. Smith that tho railcar stopped for passengers at the post office. This set the crossing lights flashing and warning bells ringing, while tho car was there holding up motor traffic and causing congestion on busy nights. The council decided to forward to the general manager of railways a letter defining the position.
