DIVORCE OPPOSED
CASE FROM CLEVEDON HUSBAND'S ALLEGATIONS The petition of James Graham Shaw, of Clevedon, farmi-r (Mr. Dickson), I for divorce from Olive Gladys Shaw (Mr. Allan J. Moody), was contested before Mr. Justice Johnston in the Supreme Court yesterday. The petition was based on allegations of adulter? in or about January or February, 1935, and Leslie Matthews (Mr. V. R. Meredith) was named as co-rcspond-ent. Petitioner and respondent were married in February, 1927, the wife having previously been granted a divorce. • Mr. Meredith said he had asked for certain details, and had not been able to get them. Mr. Dickson said he had given one specific case, but wis not in a position to give other dates. After their marriage the parties went to live on a farm at Clevedon, and for 12 months they got on happily enough. Quarrels began after that, and the respondent did not scruple to use physical force and striko her husband. In August, 193.3, Matthews became a permanent employee on the farm, and friendship between him and Mrs. Shaw caused Shaw to remonstrate with h';r. In February of this year, continued Mr. Dickson, respondent obtained a separation and maintenance order against her husband, but he later appealed against this. It was in seeking evidence in' support of tho appeal that ho found evidence of adultery between respondent and co-respondent. Petitioner gave evidence, and detailed evidence in si pport ol his allegations of adultery was given by three Maoris who had been employed on petitioner's farm. This closed petitioner's case, and the further hearing was adjourned until next week. '
