UNDERSIZED CALVES
CARRIER PROSECUTED THE NEW REGULATIONS * [from ottr own correspondent] PUKEEIOHE. Wednesday One of the first prosecutions under the regulations relating to bobby calves was brought in the Pukekohe Magistrate's Court before Mr. F. H. Levien, S.M., when an; inspector of the Society for tho Prevention of Cruelty to Animals proceeded against George Harvey, carrier, of Bombay. The charge was that on August 27 at Pokeno defendant conveyed six calves each of less weight than 1001b. and unfit by reason of weakness or ' immaturity to be driven or conveyed to the place at which they were intended to be slaughtered for human consumption. Mention was made that the offence was contrary to the Calves (Sales for Slaughter) Regulations, 1936, clauses 2 and 3. Defendant pleaded guilty. The inspector said the calves were on defendant's lorry with others defendant had collected. The six appeared to witness to bo only about two , days old.
Mr. M„ E. Griersor:, who appeared for defendant, said tike calves were taken up #b the farm gates. It was difficult for defendant to tell what their weight was or how old they were. The responsibility should rest with the farmer. In reply to the magistrate, the inupector said he could not prosecute the farmers, as defendant was not sure from which farms the undersized calves had come. Defendant was fined £2 10s and costs, 12s.
