EARLY DAYS OF RUGBY
FORMATION OF FIRST CLUB CONTROVERSY IN THE SOUTH [BY TELEGRAPH —FRK9S ASSOCIATION] WELLINGTON, Wednesday The statement made in a recent letter to the New Zealand Rugby Union by Mr. K. C. Tennent, of Woodville, concerning the formation of the first Rugbv football club in the Dominion is challenged by a newspaper correspondent, who says: "Mr. Tennent is wrong in saying the club he assisted to form ill Nelson in 1868 was the first football club in New Zealand.
"The Christchurch Football Club," states the correspondent, "was formed in 1863. This club lost its records of the first four years, so dates its career from 1867, when existing records began." The correspondent adds that, confirmation is to be found in old newspaper files of. the 'sixties. Actually football was played in Christchiirch and Lyttelton in 1562, and rules for the game weire drawn up at Christ's College in thstt year.
