WAVE SWEEPS UP BEACH HOLIDAYMAKERS DRENCHED [from oor own correspondent] LONDON, August 19 Thousands of holidayinakers on the beach at Soythsea had their first experience of luxury travel when the Queen Mary, homeward bound from New York, gave them a ducking. They had been warned by beach officials before the giant liner was due to pass Spithead, but they stayed on the beach in deck chairs within a few yards of the sea.

As the Queen Mary passed, her wash swept up the beach and carried 200 chairs out to sea. Beach officials spent the afternoon salvaging what property remained afloat. Mr. E. Batty, of Birmingham, walked into the water up to his armpits to rescue his wife's handbag, which contained £SO. He succeeded, but Mrs. Batty lost a raincoat which contained £5.
