PENAL SETTLEMENT
PROPOSAL IN TASMANIA Maria Island, on the East Coast of Tasmania, which was a penal settlement more than a century ago, in the early days of the colony, may become a prison island once more, bub under more humane conditions. The gaol in Hobart is so antiquated and cramped, having served its purpose for 100 years, that the Government has been forced to look into several schemes for n new institution. The latest serious proposal is that the gaol should be transferred to Maria Island,
