NOTES ON RUNNING

ICING BEATS SIGURD MANDAMUS WINS DECISIVELY SURELLA TAKES HACK SPRINT The third fancy, Icing, finished resolutely to win the Debutante Stakes from the second choicp, Sigurd. Scueen Star and Sigurd were first away and they were soon closely attended by Aiwai, who went very fast from outside but one at the barrier. Screen Star and Sigurd were abreast in the lead entering the straight and they wore closely followed by Icing, Aiwai, Girl Pat and Ticket. Half-way down the straight Screen Star began to weaken and Icing challenged strongly on the outside. Near the end Icing gained the upper hand and won by,a head from Sigurd, who defeated Screen j Star by two lengths. Aiwai was fourth, followed by Girl Pat. Jelly and Greenwich. Icing carried 31b. overweight and thoroughly deserved her success. She gave the West Australian jockey E. Peck his first win in New Zealand. Icing is a compactly-built filly and a full-sister to Tout le Monde and a halfsister to Aspian. She is a very resolute finisher. Sigurd, Screen Star and Aiwai ran good races and the lastnamed may have dono better if she had been more fortunate in the draw. Lucidus Succeeds The Aucklander Lucidus was a good second fancy to Valpai in the Gonville Hurdles and won all the way. Lucidus soon established a lead of six lengths and the first to attempt to go after him was Valpai, who went up second along the back. Midacrc then made a forward move and at tho turn was just behind, with Valpai and Brigadoro handy. Lucidus drew out again after jumping the last fence and won by three lengths from Brigadore, who battled on gamely even though he did not look ready. Midacre was a fair third and Valpai was fourth, with Prince Reno, Artful Dodger and Don Erma well beaten. Another second favourite was successful when Mandamus scored in tho Trial Handicap. Mandamus was first away from Airing, Sea Wrack, Count Siegfried and May Song. Before going two furlongs May Song joined Mandamus in front and they were the leaders into the straight from Sea Wrack Kia Tere and Count Siegfried. Mandamus asserted himself in the run home to win by three-parts of a length from Sea Wrack, who fought on valiantly to beat May Song by two and a-half lengths Airing was fourth, succeeded by Mazzine, Meritor and Cloudy Bay. Mandamus is a good galloper likely to win in better company. The Guineas Contest Tho Wanganui Guineas w,as decisively won by the little-fancied Deficit. who returned a good price and gained a popular victory for Mr. \\®. Higgins. Laughing Lass and Karl were quickly in front and they made play from Deficit and Gallio. who were almost' abreast ahead of Imposture. Near the three furlongs Gallio improved his position slightly, but at tho turn Laughing Lass and Karl were still together ahead of Deficit and Gallio, who was ►tiring, with Imposture next. Once in line for the post Deficit soon disposed of the leaders and he ran on strongly to score by two lengths from Laughing Lass, who defeated Karl by a head. Brazen King finished fast to cet fourth ahead of Dawning Light, Gallio and Siegmund. Deficit was nicely ridden by S. Wilson and won handsomely. Karl pulled hard early and failed near the end. Gallio was always well placed but tired in the straight. Another surprise win was registered by the Aucklander, Delrain, who scored at double figures in the Higgle Handicap. The pace was slow early when Full Throttle was in command from Red Sand, Delrain. Spiral, Boomerang and Gasman, with West Tor last. Nearing the turn Spiral, just behind the leaders Full Throttle and Red Sand, fell and brought down. West Tor, who was running up quickly. Rounding the bend Full Throttle left the rails and Delrain came through on the inside to win by half a neck from Full Throttle. Boomerang was three lengths away third and Red Sand was fourth. Next to finish was Gasman. Delrain finished on strongly, but it appeared, as if Spiral and West Tor would have been prominent if they had not fallen. The riders E. Pock and A. Jenkins escaped injury in the fall. Solid Finishing Effort It was with a solid finishing effort that Wotan defeated Orac in the Moutoa Hack Handicap. Orac attempted to win all the way and, after making play early from Whetuma, The Sandwichman, Leo Colossus and Master Cvklon, was followed into the straight by The Sandwichman, Master Cvklon, Ruaform and Wotan. Once in line for the post Wotan made a determined effort to win by a neck from Orac, with Ruaform half a length away third. Hunting Maid came from well back to be almost in line fourth and was follower] hv Master Cvklon, Recollection and Tho Sandwichman. Wotan was improved by his race on the first day and shaped like a stayer. His form since he won impressively in his first start as a two-year-old has been below expectations, but he is now likely to come into his own and do well over middle distances. The favourite Notium was beaten into third place in the Owen Handicap, which was decisively won by Royal Secret. The field left to a good start and when they had settled down Royal Secret and Notium were the leaders from Passion Flower and .Jonathan, who were together ahead of Farmer and Dungarvan. Nearing the turn Farmer ran up on the outside of Royal Secret and Notium, while Dungarvan improved his position and Jonathan was handy on the rails. As soon as they straightened up Jonathan challenged on the inside, but could not sustain the effort. : Dungarvan then made a bid, but he , could not reach Royal Secret, who ran > on strongly to defeat him by a length and a-half! Notium battled on for third ; and Jonathan was fourth, with Red Manfred and Farmer next. The winner < is very fit- and was assisted by her ex- 1 cedent condition. (

Aucklanders Prominent ( The Aucklanders Surellti and Phil eniup were favourites for the Spring Hack Handicap and they finished first and second. They were the smartest tu begin from the positions nearest tin l rails and at the end of a furlong Surella was in command from Philemup. Hatuma, Sardius and Free Gold. Just before reaching the turn Surella drew out a couple of lengths and lie was not troubled to win by two lengths from Philemup. Hatuma was three lengths away third and Free Gold was fourth. Next to finish were Impersonator, Moquette, Sardius and fast Acre. Surella was too brilliant for the opposition and won in the style of a smart horse. He is improving with every race Phiiemup beat the others just as easily as Surella defeated' him. He is racing very consistently but unluckily. However, his turn may come at any time. ]
