ROBBERY ON LINER PURSER'S SAFE FORCED SCOTLAND YARD MAN ABOARD [BY TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION] WELLINGTON, Monday While the liner Rangitane was outward bound from London to Wellington and the passengers were at dinner thieves broke into the purser's office and forced the safe. They stole property worth several hundreds of pounds and escaped unseen. Among the passengers was ex-Chief-Inspector W. C. Gough, of Scotland Yard, who was taking a holiday trip on the Rangitane. When the robbery became known he went quietly to work and as the result of his investigations before the voyage, ended the missing property was recovered almost intact, while two suspected persons were arrested by the police when the liner berthed at Wellington to-day. Two stewards, Frederick James and Peter John Frederick Ransom, were charged subsequently before Mr. R. Ferner, S.M., with theft on the high seas, between Panama and Wellington, of drafts and money to a total value of £7lO, belonging to the New Zealand Shipping Company. They were remanded urttil Wednesday.
