DAYLIGHT THEFT
INCIDENT IN CITY WOMAN'S PRESENCE OF MIND The presence of mind of Miss Dorothy Mitchell, of Ponsonby, was responsible for the detention of a man whom she saw climb the fire escape and enter a second-floor window of Messrs. Ross and Glendining's premises in Elliott Street, City, and later emerge by the same route and walk to the rear of the building, where he picked up a suitcase. Miss Mitchell and a friend followed the man to the back bar of a hotel. While her companion watched the^hotel, she went for a policeman. The fire escape is in view of anyone standing at the corner of Darby Street and Queen Street. When the man entered the building there were a number of people and cars about and the light was good. When Sergeant Holt made an arrest the man had a quantity of underwear stowed in his shirt-front, and the suitcase was standing behind the door leading to the back bar of the hotel.
