HEAD OF ADMIRALTY
VISCOUNT MONSELL RESIGNATION REPORTED SIR S. HOARE MAY SUCCEED (Received June 2, 5.5 p.m.) LONDON, June 1 The Daily Mail states that Viscount Monsell has handed his resignation as First Lord of the Admiralty to the Prime Minister, Mr. Baldwin. Sir Samuel Hoare is expected to succeed Lord Monsell.
Viscount Monsell, who was well known in English politics as Sir Bolton Eyres Monsell until he was created Viscount in December, 1935, has been First Lord of the Admiralty since 1931. He entered the training ship Britannia in 1894 and went to sea as a midshipman two years later. In 1906 he was placed on the emergency list, and in 1911 he became a Unionist Whip. On the outbreak of war he returned to the Navy, reaching the rank of commander in 1917. He then became Treasurer of the Royal Household and later a Civil Lord of the Admiralty. From 1923 to 1929, and again in 1931, he was Parliamentary Secretary to the Treasury, and during that time he also occupied the position of chief Conservative Whip.
