PRICE GUARANTEE

DAIRYING PRODUCTS ACTUAL RATE NOT FIXED STATEMENT BY MR. SAVAGE CARE IN PLANNING SCHEME [BY TELEGRAPH —SPECIAL REPORTER] WELLINGTON, Wednesday Satisfactory progress is being made with the framing of the Government's proposals for the payment of a guaranteed price to dairy farmers, according to a statement made to-night by the Prime Minister, Mr. Savage. Ministerial conferences were held with members of the. Dairy Board to-day amKMr. Savage anticipates that the bill will be ready for introduction in the House of Boprcscntatives some time next week. "it is quite definite that the actual guaranteed price will not bo fixed in the bill," Mr. Savage said. "In the main the measure provides the machinery for the payment of a price for dairy products which will cover the costs of production and which, in addition, will allow the producer reasonable living expenses. That machinery is highly important, for the scheme could not succeed without carefullyplanned administrative provisions. "However, the actual price will not he fixed for all time, nor even for lengthy periods. Some consideration will have to be paid to general market conditions and fluctuations. Accordingly provision is made in the bill for the actual price to be paid by the Government to be fixed from time to time by Ordcr-in-Cotmcil." Mr. Savage said that members of the Dairy Board had called 011 him this morning and had discussed tho proposals in the bill with the Minister of Finance, Hon. W. Nash, and himslelf. This afternoon Mr. Nash and the Minister of Agriculture, Hon. W. Lee Martin, had had a further discussion with members of the board. The bill giving expression to the Government's policy was now practically completed, Mr. Savage added. It was the embodiment of months of patient research and examination, carried out as thoroughly as was humanly possible by Cabinet Ministers and a committee of experts.
