TELEGRAPH DELAY

EAST COAST INTERRUPTION GRASS FIRE CAUSES TROUBLE A grass fire north of Napier was the cause of an interruption in the telegraphic service on the Gisborne circuit until an early hour yesterday morning. According to statements by officials of the Post and Telegraph Department yesterday a fire, which had developed late on Monday night, burned down one of the line poles and severed connection between Wellington and Auckland on that circuit. An emergency line, via Whakatane and Opotiki, was brought into commission, but there was some delay in clearing the accumulated messages from the south. The service was restored to normal in the morning before the usual heavy demands of the day were experienced.
