COUNCIL OF WOMEN

FIRST MEETING FOR YEAR The first meeting for the year of the Auckland branch of the National Council of Women was held in the council rooms last evening. The president, Miss B. E. Carnachan, presided and extended a welcome to Miss L. Bennett, new general secretary of the Auckland Y.W.C.A., who is also a delegate to the council. A letter was received from tho Women's Christian Temperance Union of New Zealand enclosing a mandate sent out by the Women's International League for Peace. It was explained that the mandate was being sent out all over the world, the objective being to raise 50,000,000 signatures to be presented to the president of the League of Nations Council and Assembly in Geneva this year. Delegates were asked to take copies of the mandate to their various societies for their approval and signatures. A remit was received from the Howard League of Penal Reform asking that the Minister of Justice should be approached with a view to having maintenance money paid to the dependents of all prisoners from the date of conviction, instead of, as at present, after three months' sentence has been served.
