KEEN FINISH IN NOVICE ROYAL PAPA'S VICTORY RIDER OF QUEEN'S PRIDE FINED [by TKLKC;It.VI'Ir OWN coiirespondent] PALMERSTON NORTH. Saturday The Novice Plate produced a groat finish, Fleeting Arrow just winning from Battle Pomp and War Lap, who in turn were separated only by inches. Fleeting Arrow and War Lap were always well placed in behind the leaders, Tommy Atkins and Golden Anne, to the stiaight, but Battle Pomp had to come from several places back. Ho finished with a great run and would have won in another stride or two, Reed having to ride desperately on the winner. Battle Pomp looked unlucky. Royal Papa, delaying his run to the straight, then produced a finishing run in the Hopelands High-Weight that proved too good for the leader, Earl Colossus. Royal Papa improved with his race the first day when ho finished very close in a narrow finish, and Earl •Colossus also improved. Gold Cure was a. poor third after having every chance and Monarchy was further back fourth, while the favourite, Blue Tiger, who was ridden by Bowdon, put up a poor effort, tailing the field all the way. This was not surprising, alter the hard race ho had the first day. Bacchus Marsh showed up for a mile covering extra ground, and then faded out. Reed's Brilliant Run Happy Landing was responsible for a brilliant performance to win the Autumn Handicap. Reed, as usual, rode a waiting raco in behind on the rails and was still there half - way up tho straight and unable to get an opening. By this time tho finish was being fought out by Queen's Pride and Wcrohia. Realising tho hopelessness of the rail position, Reed pulled out on Happy Landing and over the last fifty yards put in a sensational burst of speed to overwhelm the leading pair and win going away. Queen's Pride hung on bettor than Werohia and Full Throttle, who had loomed up from tho half-mile to the straight, weakened to fourth. The winner carried lib. over, and his performance indicates how much lie has improved. Werohia ran another sound race, but the weight troubled him at tho finish. Queen's Pride is showing good form and should soon win. Her jockey, Tattersall, was fined £lO for not riding her right out after she had Werohia beaten. 1 ho two-year-old raco was won very easily by Mandamus. Ho did not begin so well as some of the others, but he had the lead at the end of a furlong, and from that stage on the issue was never in doubt, and he won by a gtiod margin. The winner, who is a brother to Severe and closely related to Spiral, outclassed his opponents, but Bengal Lancer will improve. Defeat of Favourite A surprise was effected by Count Willonyx in the Waharahara Handicap, but he won on his merits. Royal Record and Vinco had settled the leaders, Lorelle and Warehi, in the straight, when Count Willonyx came along with a solid run. Vinco was the first to weaken, but Royal Record fought it out. Count Willonyx, however, could not be stalled off and he beat Roval Record by a head. Royal Record improved but so did the winner. Vinco ran well, but a solid finish saw him fail to justify his substantial favouritism. Soho, ridden out early near tho lead, drifted and then cnine on again to finish sixth. The winner's turn was well overdue and he has recently been tried , over hurdle^. Haut Monde improved to win tho open sprint. He and Lavina were always in front and Haut Monde dropped in behind Lavina when settled down, and then challenged in- the straight and wore her down. Sir Nigel, who had followed them in the running, was a poor third and never looked like getting the two leaders, and Arctic K : ng, while running on into fourth place, was outpaced from barrier rise. The winner looks like coming right at last. Tlias led all tho way to win the Mangapapa Handicap and scored comfortably. It was her first win of the season. Cheerful Day, who had been unlucky in the running tho first day, went to the front Vix fnrlongs from home in the last race and fought off n strong challenge at the finish by Whetnma. They finished well clear of the others.
