"MISS VICTORIA, 1935"

RETURN FROM AMERICA Miss Peggy Gamble, who won the "Miss Victoria" beauty contest for 1935, passed through Auckland on her return to Australia by tho Aorangi yesterday. She and her" mother have just made a two months' tour of Canada and tho United States. "We turned down all offers of film tests that were made Peggy," Mrs. Gamble said. "Life at Hollywood was not one that appealed to me. Ihe 'stars' we met were all very charming and gave us both a wonderful time, but the life itself is not one that a mother would choose for her daughter. There were 2500 competitors in the contest won by Miss Gamble. Unliko many beauty competitions, the prize was awarded for all-round qualifications as' well as for physical beauty. Miss Gamble is a keen sport and she rides, swims and plays tennis and golf. She is well educated and has a natural, charming manner. She entered tho contest, she said, more in a spirit of impish mischief than with any thought of winning it. No one was more amazed than she was when she was selected from the 64 girls who were personally interviewed.

Everywhere she went in America, Miss Gamble said, people were marvellously kind. In Hollywood she was taken to the homes of many of the famous " stars." She went over all tho studios, but is not, she says, disappointed that the life is not for her. She has no immediate plans for the future, but is under contract to a Melbourne newspaper for six months. After that she hopes to study the art in which her ambition lies, fashion drawing and designing. She intends to go to Paris at some future date to study.
