NOTES ON THE RACING

NELSON CHIEF SCORES SUCCESS OF KING'S GUIDE CHERRILL BEATS LYNWORTHY The each-way favourite Polly Pan refused to trot solidly in tho Manurewa Handicap and completely extinguished her chance by a bad break after going about half a mile. Most of the others also made mistakes arid tho only ones to go evenly were tho first and second horses, Nelson Chief and Worthy Princess. Nelson Chief did not competo on the first day, but ho was well supported and gave a fine display to nave the race in hand about three furlongs from home. Worthy Princess registered another sound performance, going a little fastor than on Saturday. Stalky did best of tho others, although ho broke more than onco on the journey. Reception displayed some promise and Great Sonoma showed speed in patches and should have possibilities if he becomes more solid, which is likely as he gains racing experience. Royal Jewel Improves Benefited by his race on the first day, when ho made a good showing, the three-year-old Roj r al Jewel was responsible for a sound performance to win the Howick Handicap from tho consistent buc unlucky Aerial Bell, who once again had to bo content with a minor placing. Aerial Bell attempted to win all the way, but Royal Jewel just outstayed her in the last little bit to win by half a head. Royal Jewel is tho first of the progeny of Jewel Pointer to win and the manner in which ho finished indicated that ho has •inherited a good deal of his sire's determination. Worthy Boy battled on at tho end to be a moderate third, and Scrap Iron was fourth after a bad beginning. Home Brew went well for a mile and a quarter and then faded out. Some crowding occurred when the field had covered about two furlongs and J. T. Paul, driver of Great Jewel, was thrown from tho sulky. However, he retained hold of the reins and brought Great Jewel to a standstill after being dragged for somo distance. Paul escaped uninjured. The King's Warrior-Pegaway bracket was supported down to a short price for the Alexandra Park Handicap and King's Warrior had no difficulty in repeating his first day's performance and winning easily to again return less than money back for a place. As a result of the sound pace set by Wee Machine, who was over ten • lengths clear at one stage, the race was run in fast time and the winner recorded 4.24. King's Warrior was* in second position for most of the journey and when asked for an effort a quarter of a mile from home he soon took the lead and had the field beaten at tho home turn. King's Warrior proved himself a genuine stayer. Woo Machine battled on for second to pay a fine price. Kewpie's Triumph and Smooger had evel - y chance, but the fast pace tested their staying ability to the utmost and they were very tired at tho finish. Pegaway was prominent for a mile and a half and then faded. Silk Cord Fails On the strength of his good second to Nervie's Last on the first day King's Guide was a good favourite each way for the Rangitoto Handicap and ho realised expectations by winning very decisively in the good time of 3.18 2-5. King'? Guide ran into a handy position at ..the end of the first round behind Silk Cord and Lucky Love and, although Star Pronto went past him at the half-mile, he soon put the issue beyond doubt in tho straight, winning in the style of a good horse. Like others of the progeny of Blue Mountain King, he is a sound stayer and should do well when ho attempts two miles. Star Pronto paced one of his best races and Red Frontier did best of tho others, who were well beaten. This was not surprising in view of the fact that the first and second horses went fast for the class.

The each-way favourite Golden Eagle had her sulky capsized when travelling jvell in behind the leaders after going about nine furlongs in the Forbes Handicap, giving her driver, J. T. Paul, his second fall of the day. The mishap was due to Waikato Prince breaking and interfering with Golden Eagle. The defection of Golden Eagle robbed the contest of some interest, but there was a very fine finish, in which the consistent Manna's Son won from Dilfashion, with GaJa Day a close third and Audo Patch fourth. The quartette all had winning chances in the straight and Manna's Son stayed on better than usual, recording exactly the same time as when he finished second on the first day. Dilfashion and Gala Day both trotted fine races. They were bracketed on the totalisator and the combination returned a good place dividend. A good deal of use was made of Audo Patch, who may liavo done better if ho had not reached the front quite so soon. Waikato Prince was put out of the contest when ho collided with Golden Eagle. Defeat of Lynworthy

The three-year-old Lynworthy was very heavily supported for the Richmond Handicap, and his supporters on the place machine received a good deal less than money back when ho was beaten into second place. Lynworthy failed to leave tho mark correctly and lost manv seconds before striking his hopples, heing tailed right off in what appeared an impossible position before settling down. However, F. J. Smith sent linn after tho field and he recorded a remarkably good performance for second, although lie never appeared to have any chance.with tho winner, Cherrill, who was always well placed and drew right away a couple of furlongs from home. Tollgate and Bismuth did best of tho others, who were badly beaten. . Tho bracketed horses Kewpio 3 lioncl and Ironside, second in demand to Rayon d'Or on both machines, finished first and second in tho Sylvia Park Handicap. Kewpie's Bond followed the pacemaker, Rockolla, until about two furlongs from home, when she assumed command to win narrowly from her stablemate Ironside, who finished strongly after being slow in tho early stages. It was one of the best periormances Kewpie's Bond has registered and she was very confidently driven by J. G. Robertson. Rayon d'Or had every chance, getting a fino run on the rails early, but was not quite good enough at the finish, although lie was not far from tho winner. Rockella also performed solidly and a win for him may not bo far distant. King's Play and Parrish Belle effectually settled their chances at tho start. Gold Dredge was running on and was closer at tho finish than at any other stage. f Trainer's Second Win J. G. Robertson scored his second successive win when he won tho Farewell Handicap with Francis Lincoln, who was a good second to the PegawayTravis bracket. Francis Lincoln was second on the first day to Pegaway and on this occasion he did slightly better j to score, although he skipped just as ho was passing tho post. However, he deserved his success, as ho was a triflo slow off the mark and not too well placed early. Travis was responsible for a creditable effort, but Francis Lincoln was too solid for him in the straight. Prince Pedro made a good eilort in the final stages for third and Edna Worthy showed up prominently until reaching the home turn, where she commenced to tire to eventually finish fourth.
