SPREAD OF RAGWORT
ALARM AMONG FARMERS i FLAME-THROWERS SUGGESTED [from our own correspondent] MATAMATA, Monday A decision to make a determined effort to organise on a large scale, and, if possible, to enlist the aid of the Government, to endeavour to check the further spread of ragwort was made at the monthly meeting of tho Matamata County Council on Saturday. A deputation from the Putaruru branch of the New Zealand Farmers' Union waited on the council to discuss the matter. Mr. A. R. Vosper. who led the deputation, said it would be useless for him to try to describe the terrible state of some of the country as a result of the spread of the weed. Ssome farmers were facing a situation which was absolutely hopeless Mr. J. Newell, of Tokoroa, suggested the use of flame-throwers for the work. In this way the ragwort could be destroyed whilo yet green, and the plant would have no chance of seeding. It was stated the use of unemployed labour was not very satisfactory.
