CHRISTCHURCH AIRPORT
LAND AT HAREWOOD PURCHASE BY CITY COUNCIL The Christchurch City Council at its last meeting decided to acquire from the Waimakariri River Trust and two private owners nn area of more than 500 acres of land at Harewood for a city airport. A joint statement was made after the meeting by Messrs. J. W. Beanland and E. H. Andrews, the two councillors who have been negotiating for the site. They said that the area of land to be acquired from the River Trust was 507 acres. There were two lessees. Two small areas, amounting to about 45 acres, were freehold. The price of the 507 acres was £3600. It had been resolved by friendly arrangement with the trust to acquire the trust's portion of the land under the Public Works Act. Then, should negotiations fail with the tenants, the aid of the Act would be invoked to determine their leases. A valuation would be obtained from an independent valuer of the compensation that should be paid to the lessees by the City Council. The committee which had been handling the negotiations had been instructed to expedite the completion of the arrangements, so that work might be commenced on the preparation of the site as soon as possible.
