UNLAWFULLY IN HOTEL
MEN'S REQUEST FOR LIQUOR FINES OF £2 IMPOSED ' lawful excuse on licensed premises at a time when they were required to be closed, two waterside workers, Jack Goodwin and Frank Groom, appeared before Mr. Wyrern Wilson, S.M., in the Police Court yesterday. Both defendants, who were represented by Mr. Sullivan, pleaded not guilty. The licensee of the Royal Hotel, Edwin Oliver Bennett, said defendants, in company with another man, came into the hotel about 9 p.m. on September 27 and asked for liquor. 'He said ho could not serve them and defendants left. The third man, who was drunk, remained, and witness had to eject him. Ho returned and the defendants came with him, and witness called the police. The third man was arrested and had already been beforo the Court. One of the defendants gave evidence that he and his companion returned to the hotel to take the third man out, as he seemed likely to get himself into trouble. Neither asked for liquor. The magistrate said ho was satisfied that all three tried to force the licensee to supply them with liquor. Ibis was supported by the fact that they were still arguing in the hotel when the police arrived some minutes later. Each defendant was fined 40s and costs, in default seven days' imprisonment, no time to pay being allowed.
