The field got nwny to a K°fd start and, going around the back, Landlubber load, followed bv Te Hai, Express, Ballymoney, Bcllkvrian, with Racettd last. At the top Ballymoney moved into second place, but on entering tho straight Landlubber and Bellkyrian wore neck and neck. Ballymoney came through and Racette, on the outside, made a fast run. In a great finish Racette just failed to catch Ballymoney, wiio won by a short head. Boughal was a warm favourite, but when the barrier lifted he screwed round and lost several lengths. Gold Pocket and Crooning wero the first to show out, but going across to the top Crooning was in charge from Cold Pocket, tho pair being about half-a-longth in front of Botighal. Crooning .was the first to turn for homo from Bouglftil, Gold Pocket and King Mestor and went on to win by six lengths from Boughal, with King Mestor, one and a-half lengths away, third. Royal Appellant, Gay Cockade and Green Patch. Going round tho back Teddv Boy still retained tho lead, but Royal Appellant had moved up to second position, with Whakapara, Gay Oockade, Velocipede following, and Green Patch last. Entering the straight Teddy Bov was still in front, followed by Gay Cockade, Whakapara and Velocipede. Teddy Boy went on to win easily by three lengths from Whakapara, who was three-quarters of a length in front of Velocipede. Royal Appellant was fourth, Gay Cockade and Green Patch tailing the field. / MISS LU WINS TIIE CUP VICTORY FOR BALLYMONEY / TEDDY BOY'S DUAL SUCCESS [by TEIiECBAPII —owx correspondent] WIIANGAKEI, Thursday Close finishes and a fair measure of success by tlie. favourites were tho features of the opening day of the AVhangarei Racing Chili's Spring Meeting at Kensington Racecourse to-day. This is the first meeting held since the half-holiday was changed to Saturday and urnler the circumstances there was a pood attendance. All winners were well supported. Lady Appellant and Ballymoney paid good prices. Heavy showers during last night and this morning made (he course soft at ■the commencement, but as the weather improved, and with tho exception of a few light showers remained fine, the course hardened. An innovation was the installation of / a totalisator dividend indicator and this proved of. gi'eat assistance to investors. British Jewel was badly left at the start, the remainder getting away well. Te Wara was prominent with Lady Jlabs, Tidah'a and Orefield following closely. On entering the straight Valrqnt made a fine run to gain the lead and /in an exciting finish won by a head, from Gay Rebel with Orefield _ a ' short head away third. There was practically no change until near the straight when Teddy Boy moved up to occupy third . position. There was a t creat finish among the first four horses, Tecldv Boy winning by a head from Enlightenment with Lady Diana a short head away third. Lap Up lost its rider / at a hurdle at the back of the course, t while Hawthorn fell while jumping the hurdle opposite the judges -and Sir Vanna pulled up before the straight was reached. At. the start Tea Chat led over the first hurdle, while Orenda was . slow to get away. Passing the.stand Merry Lap led from Tea Chat, Blue Bonnet, Sir Vanna and . Orenda. At the back Tea Chat and Merry Lap were together, with Orenda and Sir Vanna close up. Merry Lap v.- entered the straight first and went on to win comfortably by two and a-halt ( i .lengths from Orenda, who was four ' '• lengths in front of Tea Chat. Blue ißonnet was fourth.
