HASTINGS GALLOPS

WORK ON COURSE PROrER GOOD FIVE BY VERSION TIDAL SONG'S HALF-MILE [by tklegraph—OWN correspondent] HASTINGS, Thursday The final gallops of candidates for the Hawke's Bay spring meeting were accomplished this morning under ideal conditions. On the course proper Cyklon, not extended, ran five furlongs in 1.5. Royal Shift, a hurdler, surprised by comfortably defeating Granvale over six furlongs in 1.16}. Ho has only to jump cleanly to have a great chance on Saturday. The Bigot, a colt by Bnralong from i Bonny Lady, was too good for the j Hunting Song—Marsurd colt over three furlongs in 1595. Spt'ed went pleasingly over seven furlongs in 1.31. He is very fit. Drum peel, a vastly improved horse, ran five furlongs in 1.31, to run away from Refulgent. Helios and Gibb's Girl did four furlongs in oils. Version, who is to go to Te Rapa to compete in the novice class next week, pleased by defeating Blue Garter, a recent winner, and Blygain over five furlongs in 1.3, a gallop as good as any recorded during the morning. Hard Times was going very comfortably to finish ahead of Peggy Defoe and record 1.4 for five furlongs. First Chapter and Silver Song sprinted three furlongs in 38s. The two-year-olds Mohua and Chat ran three 1 furlongs in a shade better than 38s, Mohua finishing in front after covering much extra ground. Mohua should | perforin well on Saturday. Lavina and Gasman ran five furlongs comfortably in 1.3, but could have done better. Gasman, who is very fit, got his tongue over the bit. Tidnl Song, for a maiden candidate, impressed by defeating the speedy Huntette over half a mile in 495, the best of the morning at the distance. Thrasher was a little too good for .Tournet and Contact over a mile in 1.48. The Grasper ran six furlongs in 1.19, being brought home over the last four in 53s by Solio and Peter Beckford. The latter pair wero under restraint. On the plough Queen's Pride easily ran four furlongs in 52Js. Monarchy took 1.35 to run seven furlongs. Hest ran away from Mercian Prince to be easing up at the end of five furlongs in 1.5. Hest is one of the fittest horses at Hastings. ' NEW PLYMOUTH, Thursday Although the course at New Plymouth was rather heavy for training operations this morning there were some interesting gallons by horses with engagements at Te Rapa next week. All the galloping took place on the trial grass. Whoa Johnnie had a good break on Red Fox in the early stages of a six furlongs gallop, but he tired at the end and the pair were on tei;ms at the finish, the last five furlongs taking 1.9. Whoa Johnnie showed a good turn of pace. Red Fox finished solidly. Davistock and Aussie Ra were restricted to steady pace work. They came through their racing at Bulls in good style and are in excellent order for future engagements. Aussie Ra will be competing at Te Rapa. There was little between Glenvane and Bonny Glow at the conclusion of half a mile in 53Js, both moving freely. Bonny Glow has been sharpened up considerably by her race at Waverley, and this was one of her best efforts to date. Lady Kyra was responsible for the best gallop of the morning when sho beat Chikara by a length and a-half over five furlongs in 1.4 J. Considering the state of the track, this was a really good gallop and showed that sho has benefited considerably as a result of her race at Waverley. She should prove capable of running prominently at Te Rapa. . Hinky Pinky cantered, finishing the last three furlongs at a little better than three-quarter pace. She is progressing nicely, but'may not race again until Christmas. Tahurangi was let off with an easy task. He failed badly at Bulls, but will Srobably fulfil his engagements at Te apa. R. Barlow will also take Refresher north. The Lackham —Tigitiya mare Arvada has a filly foal to Philamor and has left to visit Defoe.
