FIFTY YEARS AGO
TRAMWAY EXTENSIONS Large numbers of men were employed halfsa century ago laying tram track* in the suburbs and minor "land booms " followed the completion of a line. Following is an extract from an item on the subject, appearing in the New Zealand Hebald of November 8, 1885: " The tramway traffic return arc going up by leaps and bounds. During October, 72,500 passengers were carried on them, or an increase of. 14,400 on' the figures for the preceding montt. This is about equal to the who\e"popu? lation of the city and suburbs —men, women and children —passing through the cars every fortnight. It may. be taken also as a sign of social prosperity that on the Ponsonby uncompleted section of two and three-quarter miles, the traffic returns are equal to those of the whole of the Dunedin main lint."
