A FESTIVAL EVENING
FINAL RECITAL FOR SEASON The final recital this season of the Classic Club was held in the Overseas Club's rooms last night. The president, Dr. S. Kenneth Phillips, presided. In welcoming the large gathering of members .and guests, Dr. Phillips said the season had been a most successful one. There was an increase in membership, and during tho year 14 private recitals and one public concert had been given. This he considered an excellent record. He paid a tribute to the splendid work of the committee in the management of the club's affairs. A delightful programme of light and festive music was presented, each item being of a uniformly high standard. The opening number comprised a bracket of classical English songs, "Where the Bee Sucks" (Artie), and "Should He Upbraid" (Bishop), sung by Miss Julie Williams, who later sang "Blackbird's Song" (Scott) and "A Birthday" (Cowen). Following was an operatic aria, "La Donna o Mobile" (Verdi), by Mr. Henry Donaldson, who later sang a group of old English humorous folk songs, "Come, My Own One," "Yarmouth Fair" and "Tho Twelve Days of Christmas." Other items included "Wild Rose" and "Wandering" (Schubert), by Miss Judith Glover, who later gave two ballads, "Sunshine and Rain" (Blumenthal) and "Charming Chloe" (German); humorous songs, "Jenny Wren" (Rowley) and "Tho Two Rats" (Watts), by Miss Lillian Kennedy, who also contributed two songs, "Nursery Rhymes'' (Curran) and "Milkmaid's Song" (Rowley); a trio of gay English songs,. "Cuckoo" (Martin Shaw), "A Rose Has Thorns" (Lloyd), and "If a Pig Wore a Wig" (Parratt), by Miss Dorothy Gordon, who later sang "The Vain Suit" (Brahms) and "I Have a Lover True" (Hugo Wolf) The concluding numbers were pianoforte solos, "Polonaise in A Flat" (Chopin), and "Prelude in A Flat" (Chopin), by Mrs. Maud Lysaght; a bracket of whimsical English songs, "When Childher Plays" (Davics), and "The Fiddler of Donney" (Dunhill), by Mr. Arthur Thompson; pianoforte solos, "Gopak" (Moussorgsky), "Gavotte" (Gardiner) and "Humoreske" (Swinstoad), by Miss Lyndall Burley; and a humorous vocal duo, "When Shall We be Married, John," by Miss Lillian Kennedy and Mr. Henry Donaldson.
