SHIPPING COMPANIES

BRIGHT FUTURE AHEAD POSITION IN NEW ZEALAND The position of New Zealand's shipping trade at the present time was discussed at the annual reunion of the Wellington Merchant Service Guild. "New Zealand is in an almost unique condition so far as shipping is concerned, because I venture to state, despite the difficult and hard times through which shipping has been passing during the last few years, tho shipping companies associated with New Zealand are all standing on their feet," said Sir Alexander Roberts, in replying to the toast of "The Shipping Companies." "None of them is suffering from financial embarrassment. They are all sound and solid, and I think we can take tho greatest credit for that. They have a bright future in front of them, and if oil the different interests associated with shipping pidl together, New Zealand will have nothing to fear." Discussing the effect of American subsidised shipping on the Now Zealand companies, the Hon. William Perry, M.L.C., said that, before tho United States had reserved the route between Honolulu and San Francisco for American companies, the British had quite a profitable trade between tho two ports. Australia and New Zealand should take similar protective measures, or else one of them should act alone.
