DISCHARGED PRISONERS

WORK OF AID SOCIETY STATISTICS FOR 38 MONTHS _A total income of £1543, including £767 in subscriptions and donations, was received by the Auckland Discharged Prisoners' Aid Society during the period from September 30, 1933, to March 31, 1935, according to the report of the secretary, the Rev. G. E. Moreton. The report records the society's decision to close its financial 3*ear on March 31 instead of September 30. The number of subscribers during the past 18 months totalled 3410. Grants of relief of various kinds absorbed £IOOO. Considerable assistance was given to probationers, ex-inmates of Borstal institutions, and ex-prisoners from various prisons in the Dominion, who were now residents of Auckland. New premises had been purchased by the society in Khyber Pass at a cost of £539. The amount paid on the purchase was £164 leaving a mortgage of £375. It was believed that the public would come to the society's aid to liquidate the mortgage. Plans had been prepared for a modern building to replace the present one when funds permitted. The report incorporates the following statistics:—lnterviews at office, 3760; visits to Mount Eden prison, 295; visits to Rangitoto prison camp, 11; interviews at Mount Eden prison, 826; addresses on the work of the society, 20; services conducted in city and suburban churches, 58;/ funerals. 40; St. John Ambulance classes in Mount Eden prison, 15; services in prison, 110; orders for clothing issued, 130; fares paid to positions, 252; prisoners helped and Christmas cheer. 400; board paid, 28; beds and meals supplied, 3006; medicine supplied, 32; grocery orders issued, 879; gas; coal, lighting, 427; goods, tools and boots supplied, 179; rents paid, 111.
