EXPERIMENTS ON ANIMALS

Sir, —Your correspondent E. D. M. Doust, in writing of insulin as the "cure for the terrible disease of diabetes," shows ignorance of the subject. As far back as December, 1922, the British Medical Journal wrote that "The production of insulin originated in a wrongly conceived, wrongly conducted and wrongly interpreted series of experiments." And now after years of trial the medical profession admits that at best it is only a palliative and. that its dangers are great. In an article in the Lancet, October 17, 1925, we read: "The drawbacks of insulin are not fully recognised, even by those who have to use it." If E. D. M. Doust "appreciates and sympathises with the feelings of the anti-vivisectionists," why .does she think "it would be of more benefit to all" if their energies were directed elsewhere? I advise the reading of some of the clearly and beautifully written literature of the late Dr. Walter Hadwin, which can be easily understood by readers of average intelligence. Sanity.
